Palmetto Expressway (SR 826) Expansion Project Including Bird Road (SW 40th St), Miller Drive (SW 56th St) and the Don Shula Expressway (SR 874) Interchanges

Project Summary:
As part of the overall improvement program for the Palmetto Expressway, The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), District 6, plans to widen the Palmetto Expressway from just north of  S.W. 40th Street / Bird Road to south of SW 56th Street / Miller Drive, including the on and off ramps between the Palmetto Expressway and the Don Shula Expressway (SR 874). This project is one of several widening improvement projects slated for the Palmetto Expressway and is designed to improve safety and traffic flow through the area.  This project includes the following:

  • Adding one new travel lane (northbound and southbound) along the Palmetto Expressway (SR 826) and the northern end of the Don Shula Expressway (SR 874) in order to improve traffic flow;
  • Widening existing bridges to accommodate the new travel lanes;
  • Widening and reconfiguring entrance and exit ramps to ease access to and from the Palmetto;
  • Installing a new storm water drainage system to improve drainage on the roadway;
  • Reconfiguring all ramps to and from the Palmetto Expressway and widening ramp shoulders;
  • Reconstructing SW 40th Street / Bird Road, SW 56th Street/Miller Drive at the Palmetto Expressway;
  • Building a pedestrian bridge over the Palmetto just north of Bird Road; and 
  • Installing new traffic signals, signage and street lights.

End Date: Summer 2012
